by Tony Curro
January 4, 1993, is a day I will never forget. It was the day of
"The HD Crash." Yes, my 300MB hard drive went down for the last
time. I had this refurbished drive for over 2 years. It served me
well. On this fateful Monday its heart just stopped beating. With a
shudder and a gasp it breathed it's last. I was working on the
system when I received an unexpected error. I was forced to reboot
the system. However, the hard drive did not respond. All my efforts
went in vain. There was no resurrection this time. So with head
downcast, I had a few moments of silence, and tried to go about the
business at hand. I am currently trying to survive with 170MB. Some
day soon I hope to add a companion to this drive. It seems too small
and lonely sitting there. I went from a full height 5.25" HD to a
3.5-1" drive.
Enough sadness for this month, lets move on to the excitement
awaiting you in this issue of CTM.
This month we take a look at both hardware and software. Central
Point Software released, PC Tools version 8.0 for DOS. We also look
at Ami Pro 3.0, Paint Shop Pro, CD Speedway, XTree for Windows,
FaxMania, and TextPert.
In games we look at Tetris Classic, and Spear of Destiny. These
games are different, yet both are very addictive.
In hardware I look at a serial/parallel card, and US Robotics
Sportster 14.4 fax/modem.
We have quite a bit of interesting stuff coming up in the months
ahead. I have some color scanners to review, a video/sound card, fax
cartridge for your HP printer, and even a complete multimedia system
from Sigma Designs. The MM system includes: video/sound card and CD
ROM. From the information I received it looks like a very impressive
combination. Keep your monitor right here for the latest and
greatest.
Until next month, may all you errors be small ones.
